Fargesia_Rufa Clumping bamboo

Fargesia dracocephala ‘Rufa’
Common name: Sunset glow

We love this Bamboo here at the nursery. It is a vigorous and hardy grower. We had three nights of 9º f temperatures in the winter of 2009-2010 and it was unaffected by the freeze, even our potted ones were fine! If you were to have only one bamboo plant, this might be it. It’s extremely hardy to -10º f to -20º f and it takes full sun too. We can get over 100º f for many days straight in the summer. It will probably need shelter in the South from hot sun especially if you have high humidity too. Purple red sheaths on new culms. Very vigorous, rapid growth and cold hardy. Dense, slightly weeping habit. Wind tolerant.  Prefers organic soils with good drainage. Thrives in sun and also tolerates shade.
