Fargesia nitida
Common name: Blue Fountain
Our Fargesia nitida is the new generation of plant material, meaning that it has been grown from seed. Our plants will not be flowering for another one hundred years! The young culms of the Blue Fountain bamboo are a waxy blue to white color. The older culms are dark purple to red. Mature plantings tend to have a cascading or some what weeping look. The foliage is dainty, elongated to oval shape. The Blue Fountain is very winter hardy, down to- 20ºf and ours take up to 100º f in the summer, but we have our beds in deep shade under the canopy of a row of Pseudotsuga menziesii, Douglas firs trees, getting only a little very late afternoon dappled sun. High heat mixed with high humidity would probably be fatal for the fargesia nitida, so this might not be a plant for those in the southeast states. New shoots branch out after 2 years.
