Phyllostachys atrovaginata Phyllostachys   atrovaginata

Common name:  Incense bamboo

The Incense bamboo is a fast growing giant timber bamboo.  Although growing to only 25′-35′, which is smaller than most giant timber bamboo, it’s culms get rather large, in proportion to it’s height.  Its culms are very straight and upright.  Due to its hollow rhizomes and roots, the Incense bamboo can take fairly wet conditions, just like the water bamboo, Phyllostachys heteroclada.    If you are looking for a bamboo to put in for edible shoot production, this would be the one.  It is also very cold hardy, down to -10° F  to –15° F.

 Synonyms: Phyllostachys congesta

 Height x Diameter:  Ht. 25’-35′x1”.
