Indocalamus Tessellatus

IndocalamusIndocalamus  tessellatus

The Indocalamus has by far some of the largest leaves on any bamboo plant in cultivation. Its large, oblong leaves can grow very large, up to 2′x4″.   We love this plant here at our nursery.  It makes an excellent container plant.  The huge leaves fill in a container, spilling out over the sides.   The Indocalamus can easily fit in any settings, whether you want an Asian, tropical,  jungle  or even a South Polynesian garden, this bamboo fits most any garden design.  The Indocalamus is a large, mounding shrub  that can grow between 4′-10′, depending on you climate.  In its native habitat it is used as a food wrap, similar to how corn husks are used in the Americas for wrapping and cooking food.  It naturally grows as an under story plant in shady areas, making it a good choice for a houseplant as well.  Here in Southern Oregon, where we can get over 100°F, it can easily take full sun without any problems.  When we hit record lows of 9°F for three nights straight in the winter of 2009-2010, we saw no damage to them what so ever, whether they were potted or in the ground.

Chimonobambusa Marmorea ‘Marbled Bamboo’

By Jack

Chimonobambusa marmorea ‘Marbled Bamboo’ Chimonobambusa marmorea
(ky-moh-no-bam-BOO-suh mar-MOH-ree-uh)

Common name: ‘Marbled Bamboo’
This dwarf running bamboo makes a great small hedge , patio or indoor container plant. We like it because it is almost a dwarf Black bamboo. The new growth in spring is covered in sheathing that is marble red with white blotches.   At sheath drop mahogany red culms are revealed, as in this picture.  Direct sun tends to keep the culms more colorful, but the lush, full foliage prefers some shade, so cooler,  morning sun tends to best for this plant.  It tends to shoot late into the fall.  These shoots generally do not leaf out until the following year here in the southern Willamette valley.  Often times those shoots are damaged by winter cold.  Sometimes they will leaf out in the spring, other times they need to be removed. It does spread a little faster than other bamboo, although no faster than any other dwarf ones.
Height x Diameter: 6′-8′ x.75″.
Minimum temperature: 0ºf.
USDA zone 5-9, find your zone here Maya Gardens Inc – USDA zone map .
Light: Part shade.
Culm: Light green, red in the fall with some sun.
Uses: Container, hedge, specimen or houseplant.
Distribution: Japan and China.

Sasa Palmata ‘Nebulosa’

By Jack

Sasa PalmataSasa Palmata ‘Nebulosa’
Common name:  Okuyama-zasa.
The large leaves on the Sasa palmata, up to 14″ x  2-4″,  adds a tropical look to any garden.   This fast
growing dwarf is at home in the under story of  larger  plants and trees.  In its native habitat of  Japan, Korea and Russia it can usually be found growing in woodlands.   It is fast growing, up to 10′.  Its culms turn black with age, adding even more interest to this bamboo.  Like many dwarf bamboos, this can spread fairly rapidly, so give it plenty of room to roam, contain it in the ground,  or use it as  a container planting for your deck or patio, around a hot tub, courtyard or entry way.  This is a  beautiful bamboo when filled out in an Asian pot.

Synonyms:
 Sasa cernua ‘Nebulosa’.

Sasa_ViechiiSasa Veitchii
This Sasa is grown primarily for its incredible winter color.  During the Fall, the edges of the dark green leaves slowly developed creamy, white edges.  It is by far one of the most striking winter colors on any bamboo.  Although it grows well in most conditions, especially in the Pacific Winter color on the Sasa veitchii North West, its natural habitat is the under story in the mountain region of southern Honshu, Japan, around the 1100′ elevation.  It is best as a ground cover in a shady area or as a container plants.  As with many of the dwarf bamboos, you can cut this one back, or mow it late in the spring, just prior to the bud opening on the culms, or when you start seeing some of the new culms just starting to emerge from the ground.

Pleioblastus Viridistriatus ‘Dwarf Greenstripe’

By Jack
Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Pleioblastus viridestraitusPleioblastus  viridistriatus
Common name:
‘Dwarf Greenstripe’
The Dwarf Greenstripe has some of the most beautiful foliage of all bamboo. When you rub  your  fingers across the leaves, you can feel the  soft,  velvety texture to them.  The Chartreuse leaves are striped with green in shade,  yellow with  green stripes in sun. This small dwarf is a partially deciduous, meaning that it will typically lose some of its
foliage, even in mild winter areas.  Don’t be alarmed.  Pruning back the plant just before it starts to re grow in the Spring will help tidy it up and create a full, healthy looking plant by the time it leafs back out  You can also mow it down early Spring if it is planted in the ground.  This particular bamboo  makes a very fine container plant. Best with some shade. Avoid strong sun, as it can burn the edges of the leaf.  The Dwarf Greenstripe can be grown as far north as Chicago and Minnesota, although most likely it will be a  perennial, coming back up from the roots every year.
