Phyllostachys vivax ‘Huangwenzhu Inversa’
Common Name: Kimmei Vivax
This newest form of vivax is colored like the Castillon form of bambusoides. Yellow culms with a green sulcus. It is more vigorous and hardier than Castillon. It is going to be one of the most sought after forms due to the brilliant contrast between the yellow culms and the dark green leaves and sulcus, and its hardiness. This form sometimes has extra green stripes on the culms, making it even more spectacular.

The Incense bamboo is a fast growing giant timber bamboo. Although growing to only 25′-35′, which is smaller than most giant timber bamboo, it’s culms get rather large, in proportion to it’s height. It falls right in between what is a timber and a giant timber bamboo. Its culms are very straight and upright. Due to its hollow rhizomes and roots, the Incense bamboo can take fairly wet conditions, just like the water bamboo, Phyllostachys heteroclada. If you are looking for a bamboo to put in for edible shoot production, this would be the one. It is also very cold hardy, down to -10° F to –15° F.

Phyllostachys vivax ‘Aureocaulis’
Common name: Golden vivax
The Phyllostachys vivax ‘Aureocaulis’ is one of the best yellow bamboos that we grow. The new culms emerge a bright golden yellow. Some culms fade to a butterscotch yellow with age. Most every one has a green stripe along the culm. Sometimes the stripe is a tiny pinstripe, sometimes it is much wider. Most all culms have some striping, however, there are times that a culm may be all yellow, other times the culm can be one half green, one half yellow. The amount of stripping is extremely variable not only from culm to culm, but also between each node. This picture shows how the stripping can vary on a culm. Although it can grow very tall, here in the Pacific North West it will most likely reach only 40 feet plus. This is a new giant timber bamboo. Here in Eugene, Oregon at our nursery we recorded three consecutive nights of 9°F, day time temperatures did not reach above the low 20′s. Our growing beds were untouched by the freeze, however some of our potted ones experienced some dieback on their foliage. It is probably much hardier than -5°F in the ground. This plant would make an incredible grove

Phyllostachys vivax is the fastest growing cold
hardy bamboo. It is very fast growing, up to 72′.
Here in the Pacific North West it is the largest
growing bamboo that we have, to 60′ by 4″ in some places. The shoots are excellent for eating. Usually they can be harvested in June/July. The vivax has thinner walls than other giant timber, making it a great bamboo for crafts. In areas with heavy snow or ice the culms can break do to weight. It is hardy down to -5°F .

Phyllostachys rubromarginata
Common name: Red margin
The Phyllostachys rubromarginata is another excellent choice for a giant timber for cold climates. It is extremely cold hardy, down to -5°F-10°F. Red margin is a fast grower, making it an excellent choice for a screen or grove. Its foliage and branching starts low on the culm, almost at ground level. Red margin gets its name because of the red borders and striping on the culm sheaths. Though it grows to as much as 50′-60′, as with most all bamboo, the colder the climate, the shorter your plant will mature to, both in height and culm caliper.

Phyllostachys nigra
Common name: Black bamboo, Kurochiku.
Phyllostachys nigra is the quintessential black bamboo. If you want a pure black bamboo, this is the one you want to order. Nigra bamboo has ebony black culms after a few years. The new culms emerge green, fading sometimes to yellow, before turning all black. Foliage is lush, green and smaller. Unless there are ideal conditions, Black bamboo will grow to 20′-30′. Black is native to Taiwan and Japan. It is hardy to around 0° F. It has a somewhat weeping habit, mostly due to the abundance of foliage high up on the culms. Legging up would make the culms a little more erect. Black bamboo is generally a slower grower, especially as a young plant. Great for groves and screens.

Phyllostachys nigra ‘Megurochiku’
Megurochiko was once rare and protected from collection. It originated from a single Japanese island. Its culms are similar to the ‘Henon’. They emerge green and fade to yellow. With age the sulcus, the groove between branches as shown in the photo, slowly develops a black/brown stripe. In the Pacific Northwest it may grow to 30′, taller in warmer climates. It would make an excellent hedge or grove.

Along with ‘Henon’, the Madake or Japanese
