Common name:  Water Bamboo

 As the name implies, this is a bamboo that can take very wet conditions, even standing water, due to the fact that the culms and roots  both have hollow. air channels.   It does very well in sites that other bamboos would perish.  Slender zigzag culms with dense horizontal that turn to a dark grey green  color. 

 

 

 

Synonyms:   Phyllostachys purpurata.

Height x Diameter:  Ht. To 30’.

Minimum temperature:  Hardy to 0° f.

In zone 5 expect 8′ tall plants with winter damage.  In zone 10 expect full size plants.

Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henonis' Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henonis’ 
Common name:  Henon, Ha-chiku.
The giant timber Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henon’ is an excellent choice for a groove, or forest.  It’s extremely drought tolerant, grows in full sun or shade and has very upright, erect culms.  The Henon is perhaps the true species of ‘Nigra’.  Its culms emerge light green and fade to a soft green.  Even though it is classified as a black, it has no black in its culms.  It is hardy down to around 0°F. In the Pacific Northwest it probably grows to about 50′.

Phyllostachys Dulcis

Common name:
  Sweet shoot bamboo.
The Dulcis, or Sweet shoot bamboo has large, 
thick culms for its short size. You would typically 
find this size culm on a much taller bamboo.  Its 
shoots are prized for their tasty, early season  production. Culms are green to blue with a white ring developing around them.  The shoot in the picture  is barely over 10′ tall and you can see how large it is.  Occasionally there are yellow stripes running up the culms.  Sweet shoot has large, dark green drooping leaves, giving it a very full look. It is a quick growing bamboo,  making it a great choice for a screen, hedge or grove.

Common name:  Beautiful bamboo, Meizhu.

The Decora bamboo is a cold hardy giant timber reaching up to 30′ and hardy to -10°F.  It performs very well under stress of desert heat,  drought, or cold. It has massize drooping leaves on straight, upright culms.  It is a native to the Yangtze valley of China. The decora shoots up early in the year, with colorful culm sheaths and red to purple new shoots.

Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory'Phyllostachys  nigra ‘Bory’   
Common name:  Bory, Snakeskin bamboo, Tiger 
bamboo.
Phyllostachys nigra ‘Bory’ is a black giant timber,  with spotted mahogany/black on green culms, usually  on two year old culms. This form of black grows much taller than Phyllostachys nigra, to 50′x3″.  It is hardy to 0°F.  Its foliage is narrow and dense. Like most giant timber, it prefers full sun.
