By Jack
Monday, July 19th, 2010

Phyllostachys aureosulcata

Common name:  Yellow groove
Yellow groove has dark green culms with alternating yellow strips in the sulcus (internodes). Similar to the other “Crookstems” their is an occasional zigzag to the culms, maybe 1 in 10 culms and some slight variegation in leaves. It is extremely hardy, down to -10° f to-15° f.   It  sends up its new culms early, by March here in Eugene, Oregon. We have had one of these in a container for many years now and it makes a beautiful container plant. It also makes an excellent hedge or screen and can take windy conditions easily.  With the exception of the Northern Midwest states of Minnesota, Wisconsin,  North and South Dakota and Nebraska, all of our Yellow Groove and Crookstems will grow most anywhere in the U.S

Height x Diameter:  30′-40′ x 2″.

Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Aureocaulis’ Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Aureocaulis’  Golden Crookstem

Common name:  Golden Crookstem
The Golden Crookstem is hardy down to -10°, making it probably the hardiest of all the yellows. Its completely yellow culms are sometimes streaked with green at base.  Like some of the other  crookstems,  this one turns red to mahogany reds.  Also, like the other Crookstems, it too gets the occasionally zigzagging pattern in its culms.  The Golden  Crookstem  makes  an excellent hedge, screen, wind break or container plant.  We have two here at the nursery in 100 gallon size Asian pots on our outside deck that are beautiful.  They are both almost 20′ tall and sway with just the slightest of wind.  Imagine looking up at them from your hammock or hot tub relaxing  after a hard day in the garden!!

Phyllostachys Aurea ‘Koi’

By Jack
Monday, July 19th, 2010

Phyllostachys Aurea ‘Koi’

Common name:  Koi
This type of Golden bamboo is very similar to the species, with the exception that the culm and branches are a golden yellow,   with green striping in the inter nodes.  Like Golden, the nodes are compressed on the lower portion of the culm.  This is a very colorful bamboo, sometimes showing a little variegation in the leaves and picking up a tint of red from the sun, like the Crookstems.  The Koi makes a great screen or hedge due to its low growing limbs and foliage.  Like the Golden, it can be aggressive in hotter parts of the U.S.  In colder areas of the U.S., like other more aggressive bamboos, it’s a little more tame.  See our Planting and care page for ideas on how to control your Bamboo.

Height x Diameter:  Ht. 25’x1.75”.
Minimum temperature:  Hardy to 0° F.

In zone 7 expect 8′-12′  tall plants with winter damage.  In zone 10 expect full size plants.
Light:  Full sun.
Culm:  Green, turning yellow with age, with  green inter nodes.
Uses:  Hedge, screen, container.

Phyllostachys aurea ‘Golden bamboo’      Phyllostachys aurea ‘Golden bamboo’
Common name:
Golden bamboo,  fish pole bamboo,  Hoteichiku.

Golden Bamboo is probably the most common of all bamboo. It makes a great screen, as it is a rigid and upright grower.  It tends to branch out at very low levels, making a dense, full screen that is great for privacy hedges.  It is very hardy as it is cold, heat, and drought tolerant. The culms on Golden bamboo come out green, as in this picture.  However, with age and sun, the culms fade to yellow.  The lower internodes on mature Golden bamboo tend to become distorted  and compact with age.  Golden can tend to run rapidly in hot climates, it is better suited as a contained  plant.  Either with an in ground barrier or in an Asian pot.

Common name:  Incense bamboo

The Incense bamboo is a fast growing giant timber bamboo.  Although growing to only 25′-35′, which is smaller than most giant timber bamboo, it’s culms get rather large, in proportion to it’s height.  Its culms are very straight and upright.  Due to its hollow rhizomes and roots, the Incense bamboo can take fairly wet conditions, just like the water bamboo, Phyllostachys heteroclada.    If you are looking for a bamboo to put in for edible shoot production, this would be the one.  It is also very cold hardy, down to -10° F  to –15° F.

 Synonyms: Phyllostachys congesta
