Makes a nice small specimen tree or large multi-stemmed shrub growing 15′ to 20′ with an equal spread.  Naturally an under story tree. Slow to moderate growth.  Leaves are 2″-4″, usually unlobed, though young trees may have 3-5 lobed leaves.  Bright green leaves turn red and yellow in the fall. Prefers sunny, dry locations. Tolerant to adverse soil conditions and drought.  Easily grown from fresh seed sown in October.

Meaning of: Tataticus,  from Tartaria, the area including central Asia and European Russia, east of Don River.
Synonyms: Acer tataricum, A. cordifolium, A. tartarinum.
Common names: Tartarian maple, Tartarischer Ahorn.
Habit: Shrub to small tree to 30′.  Reddish-purple leaves in spring.
Leaves: Leaves may be 3-5 lobed while the tree is young, unlobed as it matures.  Leaves to 2″-3.5″ long and wide.
Flowers: Pale green to white.

 Acer truncatum is abundant in its native range.  It is a slow growing tree that grows to approximately 20′ to 25′ with an equal spread.  It has a tendency to be a large shrub under cultivation outside of its native range. A very nice maple tree for small lawn areas or streets.  Leaves are 3″-5″ with 5-7 lobes.  New foliage emerges purple-red, fading to a glossy green in summer and changing to yellows, reds and oranges in the fall.  Adaptable to most soils but prefers moist well drained soils.  Native to China.

Section:Platanoidea.
Meaning of:
Truncatus, truncate, refers to the shape of the leaf base.
Common names: Purpleblow maple, Shantung maple, Akajika itaya, Mansen itaya.
Habit: Small tree to 30′-40′, densely branched, green to purple branches.
Leaves: Five to seven lobed, 3″-5″ wide.  Young leaves purple, fading to green with a tinge of purple along edges as the mature.
 

Flowers: Yellow green, after leafing our.

The Redvein Maple is a small to medium sized tree, sometimes multi-trunked to 25′-35′.  It is native to  Japan.   Its leaves are up to 5″ wide with 3-5 lobes. The dark green leaves turn to orange,  yellow and red in the fall.  Young branches are often bluish-white, turning to green with white striping with age. Can take full sun, but would do well with some shade.

Oliver Maple
Not usually found in cultivation, the Oliver Maple is a small growing tree from central China that resembles the Acer palmatum.  It grows to approximately 15′ to 25′ with an equal spread, perfect for someone wanting a  tree similar to the palmatum, but a little larger.  It’s leaves are 2″-4″, with similar characteristics to the Japanese  Maple.  The glossy green summer leaves turn to oranges and reds in the fall.  It is heat and drought tolerant, even able to grow in sandy soils. Difficult to propagate, even from fresh seed, making it somewhat rare in the trade.  An ideal tree for the Pacific Northwest.

Section: Palmata.
Meaning of: Oliverianus, named after Daniel Oliver(1830-1916), English botanist.
Common names: Oliver Maple.
Habit: Large shrub to small tree to 15′-25′.  Young new branches are green to purple.
Leaves: Five lobed palmata, 2″-4″ wide; green.
Flowers: White flowers appearing with leaves.

Manchustriped Maple
The Manchustriped Maple is a small oval to rounded tree that grows to 20′-30′.  It has green to greenish-purple branches that develop white vertical striping on its second year of growth.  Branches have a bluish wax on them. Leaves are 4″-6″, 3-5 lobed, pale green turning yellow in fall.  Native to Manchuria and Korea. Acer tegmentosum rarely sets viable seed, so it is not readily available in the nursery trade.

Synonyms: Acer pensylvanicum ssp. tegmentosum.
Common names: Amur’scher Ahurn, Manchustripe maple.
Habit: Small tree to large shrub to 30′ tall. Branching is sparse.  Young shoots are blue, developing white stripping with age.  Mature branching is purple to gray green.
Leaves: Three to five  lobes, 3″-4″ wide, green.  Leafs out very early in spring.

Acer Mandshuricum Manchurian Maple

A great small tree  growing  30′ to  40′ with approximately two thirds spread; upright growth. Tri foliate leaves are 3″-5″.  Dark green summer leaves turn red to rose red early October in most areas.   Loses foliage earlier than most maples.  Adaptable to most soils, but moist, well drained soils are best.  Full sun.  Native to Manchuria and Korea. Rare species remotely related to Acer griseum, but without the peeling bark.  Acer mandshuricum is rare in the trade due to the lack of viable seed. It is possible to propagate by cuttings or grafting.

Meaning of: Mandshuricus, meaning from manchuria.
Synonyms:
Acer mandsurica, Crula mandshurica, A. kansuense, A, mandshuricum ssp kansuense.
Common names: None.
Habit: Large shrub to small tree to 30′-40′.
Leaves: Trifoliolate, 2″-4″ long and wide, dark green above, blue green
below.
Flowers:
Geenish yellow in May.

Korean Maple
Another small tree from China and Manchuria, similar in characteristics to the Acer palmatum.  Grows to a 15′ to 25′ upright tree with an equal spread.  It’s green leaves are similar to the palmatums, with 9-11 lobes and fade to brilliant fall colors ranging from orange, scarlet to crimson.  It is hardy down to -40°f.  Still somewhat rare in the trade.  Easily propagated from fresh,  green seed or by grafting to Acer palmatum.  There is only one subspecies, Acer pseudosieboldianum ssp takesimense.

Leaves: Nine lobed to 2″-3″ across, dark green.  In mild winters leaves may linger until Spring.
Flowers: Purple-red, before leafing out.

The Hornbeam Maple is aptly named,  as its 3″-5″ oval leaves resemble those of a Carpinus.  It is a small vase- shaped, sometimes multi-trunked,  tree growing 20′-25′ tall.  Fall color is typically a rich orange/brown.  It prefers moist, well drained soil with some shade.  Native to Japan. Tends to grow leggy in wooded areas and alongside streams in mountainous areas. Extremely hardy.  Seldom sets viable seed, therefore Acer carpinifolium is still quite rare in the nursery trade.

Acer Davidii ‘David Maple’

David Maple
The David Maple, native to central China, is fast growing to 25′x25′ with an open habit.  It’s young  branches are red to purple to green in color.  It  develops white stripes on its bark with age.  It is one of the best know striped bark Maples.  The leaves are 3″-6″, oval shaped and unlobed.  The glossy green foliage turns reddish orange in fall.  It is an ideal Maple tree for the Pacific Northwest.   Prefers a slightly acidic, moist soil.  Easy to propagate from seed or graft to other Macrantha.  Many cultivars are available.

Meaning of: Davidii, named after Father Armand David(1826-1900) French missionary and botanist.
Synonyms:Acer cavaleriei, A. laxiflorum var ningpoense, A. sikkimense var davidii, A. sikkimense  var serrulatum.
Common names:David Maple, Father David’s maple, David’s Ahorn(German).
Habit: Multi trunked shrub to tree up to 40′-45′, much smaller under cultivation.  Mature branches and stems are green with white stripes; young ones are red with white stripes. Sometimes three to five trunked with a mostly open habit.
Leaves:Oval to oblong shape, 3″-6″, dark green.  Young trees usually will have lobed leaves.  Mature trees tend to have unlobed leaves.  Fall color is yellow and red.
Flowers: Light yellow, with each branch having both male or female flowers.  Branches may alternate between male and female flowers in successive years.

Paperbark Maple

The Paperbark Maple, native to central China, grows slowly to 20′x30′.  It has an oval to rounded habit.  The bark is rich brown to cinnamon brown and begins to exfoliate on its second year of growth.  It is a trifoliate with 3″-6″ long dark green leaves, which turn to bronze red in fall. Colors best with some shade.  The Paperbark Maple is adaptable to most soils but prefers well drained moist soils; full sun.  Truly an ornamental asset.  Seeds usually have a very low viability rate, less than 1%, which contributes greatly to the higher price within the trade.
