Acer Triflorum ‘Three Flower Maple’

The Three Flower Maple is a small tree to 20′-30′, shorter under cultivation. It is similar to the Acer griseum and the  Acer Mandshuricum,  with bark that peels off in little scales.  Fall color is golden yellow with some orange and red.  It is common in collections, but rarely seen outside of arburetums.  It is drought tollerant as well as adaptable to clay soils, however it does not like overly wet or compacted soils.  Three-flower maple has incredible fall color ranging from brilliant orange, scarlet, purple and gold.

Leaves: Trifoliolate, 1″-2.5″ long.
Flowers: Yellow flowers are produced in small corymbs of three small flowers each, hence the name.

Acer Tataricum Ssp Ginnala ‘Amur Maple’

 Large shrub to small tree, multi trunked to 25′, rarely a single trunk.   Leaves are sometimes variegated with white and pink edges.  Brilliant red and orange fall color.  Cultivars include ‘Bailey Compact’, ‘Flame’, ‘Fire’, and ‘Durand Dwarf’. One of the most common maples in cultivation.  Winner of the 1993 Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Easily propagated by fresh green seeds.

Section: Ginnala.
Meaning of: Ginnala, Common name for Amur maple in Manchuria and northern China.
Synonyms: Acer acinatum, A. theiferum, A. ginnala ssp theiferum.
Common names: Amur maple, Amur-Ahorn Karakogi kaede.
Leaves: Three lobed, to 1.5″-4″ wide by 1″-3″ long.  Dark green, sometimes leaves may be unlobed.
Flowers: Creamy white.

Acer Monspessulanum ‘Montpellier Maple’

The Montpellier Maple usually forms a small, densely branched tree to 20′-30′, though smaller in cultivation. Its fall color is yellow.  Because of its wide natural range, there are many variants of Acer monspessulanum.  Most likely Montpellier maple would do well in a sunny, dry location with little Summer water after becoming established.

France city of Montpellier.
Synonyms: Acer trifolium,  Acer trilobatum,  Acer trilobum,  Acer ibericum,  Acer illyricum,  Acer monspessulanum ssp ibericum,  Acer obtusatum var. ibericum,  Acer creticum,  Acer liburnicum,  Acer littorale, Acer talyschense.
Common names: Montpellier maple, Burgenahorn, Dreilappiger Ahorn, Erable de Montpellier, Sestilo.
Habit: Usually a small dense shrub to a small, densely branched tree.  Can grow to 20’-30’ with a rounded crown,  but usually smaller in cultivation; semi evergreen to deciduous.

Leaves: Three lobed, rounded to 1”-2” across, dark, shiny green.
Flowers: Yellow/green in April and May.
Distribution: Technically not an Asian Maple, though its distribution just barely touches part of Western  Asia. Widely distributed in the Mediterranean area including: Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, southern Georgia and Ukraine, south France, parts of Germany, mostly sunny, dry river valleys, Western Asia, Algeria and Morocco. Can grow in milder parts of North America.

Acer Mono ‘Painted Maple’

The Painted Maple is a tree up to 50′ with smooth, yellow gray bark.  It is usually broader than high. Easy to propagate from fresh seed. Propagation by grafting to Acer platanoides can be done as well.  Yellow fall color.  Cultivars are ‘Hoshi yadori’, ‘Tokiwa nishiki’, ‘Usugumo’.

Acer Henryi

 Discovered by Augustine Henry.  Rare in cultivation because viable seed is not often available.  Propagation also by layering.  Fall color is yellow and red. A small tree to large shrub to 30′-35′, and as wide.

Meaning of: Henryi, named after Augustine Henry(1857-1930), an Irish plant hunter.
Synonyms: Acer henryi var serratum, A. henryi f. intermedium, A. stenobotrys, A. cissifolium, Crula henryi.
Common names: Henry’s maple.
Leaves: Trifoliolate (3 leaflets), 2″-4″, green.
Flowers: White, before leafing our.

(Ay-ser Cau-da-tum)

Very rare in cultivation.  Yellow fall color, often a small tree or multi stemmed  shrub.  Midsize to 15′-25′, bark sometimes exfoliates in small flakes.  This is a new tree to the nursery this year and we love it.  It appeares to be fast  growing, easily taking full sun to over 100ºf.    This is a beautiful tree, a must have for any tree collector!

A small tree or multi trunked shrub to  approximately 20′ to 25′ and equally as wide, making it an excellent small, rounded to oval patio
or street tree.  It’s growth rate is slow to medium. Orange/yellow to scarlet fall color.
Easily propagated by fresh, green seeds.  Not common in the trade. numerous  cultivars are available, including ones that are variegated and others with incurved leaves.  The Trident Maple is hardy to -15°f to -20°f.  It is drought tolerant, but does fine in most well drained soil. Takes full sun.

Common Names: Trident Maple, Dreizahn ahorn, Dreizahn-esdoorn, Hana zakura, Kakunimo sankaku kaede, To kaede, Toyama kaede.
Leaves: 3 lobed, 1″-3″, forward pointing, triangular.  New growth is often bronze to purple, fading to a glossy green in summer.
Flowers: White, small, numerous.  Appearing in May.
