Acer palmatum ‘Ukigumo’Acer palmatum ‘Ukigumo’   (Ay-ser pahl-MAY-tum)

Extremely variegated palmata leaves with five lobes.  Dense growing shrub or small tree to 4′-6′.  Most leaves show some variegation, some are almost all white, while others are green with  ‘floating clouds’ of white and pink mixed in. Can take full sun, but would do well with some shade. Prefers well drained,  moist soils.

Meaning: “floating cloud”.

Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku'Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’ (Ay-ser pahl-MAY-tum)

Large shrub to small tree growing to 12′.  Branches are a brilliant coral red in winter. Small, 5 lobed green leaves in summer, fading to yellow in fall.  Branch color is best in young shoots.  Upright growing with a spreading crown with age.  Can take full sun, but would do well with some shade. Prefers well drained,  moist soils.

Narrow, shrub like to 12′, smaller than ‘Bloodgood’.  Five to seven lobes, dark purple to almost black red.  Good for where a ‘Bloodgood’ is to large.  Moderate to rapid growing when young.  Fall color is crimson red.  Can take full sun, but would do well with some shade. Prefers well drained,  moist soils.

Acer Palmatum ‘Emperor I’

Acer palmatum ‘Emperor I’      Acer palmatum (Ay-ser pahl-MAY-tum)  ‘Emperor I’ Comparable to cultivar ‘Bloodgood’.  E1 exceeds ‘Bloodgood’ in retaining red color through the summer.  Leafs out 2 weeks later than Bloodgood’. Holds color better in the shade, but
still shows some green in deep shade.  Crimson fall color, 5-7 lobes, large 3.5″ to 5″ leaves.  Very hardy and vigorous growing to an upright crown shaped tree to 12′.   Can take full sun, but would do well with some shade. Prefers well drained,  moist soils.

scarlet red to salmon pink; young branches are purple to dark red.  Mature foliage fades to a 
green-blue, fall color is orange/red fall.  Best planted in a sheltered location.   Can take full sun, but

 Silver/green variegated shrub to 10′, upright with stiff branching.  Small, 5 lobe leaf.  Pink/red fall color.  An ideal tree for small gardens.  Possibly dates back to 1882 as ‘Kocho nishiki’.  Can take full sun, but would do well with some shade. Prefers well drained,  moist soils.

Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'Acer palmatum (Ay-ser pahl-MAY-tum)  ’Bloodgood’

Some of the darkest leaves of all Palmatums.  Usually 5 lobes.  Holds color well through the summer.  May loose some color in deep shade. Fall color remains red.  Somewhat narrow growing, to 15′. Possibly originated from a Dutch cultivar from Ebbinge and van Groos of Boskoop, The Netherlands.  Very common in the trade. May sunburn in full sun and extreme heat.

Narrow, long lobes to 5″. Seven lobed, fresh green, serrated, turning golden yellow to orange in fall.  Usually a shrubby tree to 6′-10′ in cultivation.  Drooping branches give it a round bush effect.
