Widely distributed in North America.  The true Sugar maple is used to make maple syrup.  A large, upright oval to rounded tree growing to 60′-70′ by 40′; slow to medium growing tree.  Leaves are 3″-6″, with 3-5 lobed.  Dark green summer leaves fade to orange and yellow, with some reds. The Sugar Maple makes a large shade or lawn tree.  Easily grown from fresh seed.

Upright tree to 100′, though much smaller under cultivation.

Three to five lobed, 3″-6″ wide.

Pale yelow, before leafing out.

Red Maple

One of the most common trees on the east coast of the United States. A large pyramidal tree growing to 40′-60′.  Medium fast growth to 12′ in 5-7 years.  Leaves are 2″-4″, with 3-5 lobes.  Green leaves fade to yellows and reds in the fall.  An excellent specimen for lawn or street.  Tolerates most soils, but prefers slightly acidic, moist  conditions. Propagates easily from fresh green seed sown in May and June.

Synonyms: Acer carolinianum, A. barbatum, A. Saguineum, Saccharodendron barbatum, Rufacer rubrum.
Common names: Red maple, Megasuri noki, Rode esdoorn, Rot-Ahorn.
Habit: Large tree with open crown, to 100′-120′ in its native range, however much smaller under cultivation, perhaps to 50′-60′.
Leaves: Three to five lobed, 3″-4″ across, dark green above with silver gray below.
Flowers: Red.

Acer Pensylvanicum ‘Snakebark Maple’

Snakebark Maple
A slow growing, openly branched  small tree or large shrub growing to 15′ to 20′, with a spread equal to about two thirds of its height. The only Stripe bark Maple native to North America.   Young branches are red to greenish brown, turning to green with white striping with age.  Leaves are 5″-7″ with 3 lobes.  It’s leaves open with pink coloration, changing to bright green, then fading to vibrant yellow fall color.  This tree prefers  moist, well drained part shade conditions.  Great for a naturalized landscaping as an understory plant. Does  very well in the Pacific Northwest.  Easily propagated from seed. Can also be grafted to any Macrantha section species. Very few cultivars exist.

Meaning of: Pensylvanicus (sic), from Pennsylvania. ( Do to an original misspelling when the name was originally recorded.)
Synonyms: Acer striatum, A. canadense, A. tricuspifolium, A. pensylvanicum var. integrifolium.
Common names: Moosewood, Striped Maple, Pennsylvanisher Ahorn, Streifen-Ahorn.
Habit:Small tree to a multi trunked tree to 30′-40′, though smaller under cultivation. Branches are striped with wide, white stripes, young growth is pink to salmon pink with white stripes.
Leaves: Three lobes 5″-7″.
Flowers: Yellow-green after leafing out.

Eastern North America, Georgia north to Minnesota, Great Lakes, Appalachians, to

Rocky Mountain Maple

A small tree, shrub or clumping maple growing to 6′-24′; usually tall and open in shade, with a more dense and bushy growth form in open sun.  Leaves are 2″-4″  with 3 lobes, light green turning to reddish orange in the fall.  Young branches are red. The Rocky Mountain Maple grows in a variety of soils and is drought tolerant. This Pacific Northwest native is found along river banks in the Mountain regions of California, the Cascade range to the Siskiyou Mountains, extending to North to Alaska.

Meaning of: glabrus/glaber meaning glabrous having no hairs, projections, or pubescence; smooth , douglasii after Scottish plant hunter David Douglas(1799-1834).
Synonyms: Acer barbatum, A. subserratum.
Common names: Rocky Mountain Maple ssp Douglasii.
Habit: Densely branched shrub to small tree to 15′-20′.  Young stems can be scarlet red.
Leaves: Almost always 3 lobed, 2″-4″ wide.
Flowers: Yellow green.

Acer Circinatum ‘Vine Maple’

A Pacific Northwest native closely resembling the Acer Palmatum, Japanese Maple. The Vine Maple is the only Palmata that naturally grows outside of Asia.  Here in Oregon it is typically an understory tree,  “vining” its way throught the canopy above it to the sun.  Though it is naturally a shade loving tree, it can easily grow in full sun conditions.  Expect a much shorter tree or shrub, perhaps only to 6′-8′, rather than the 10′-15′ height in the shade.  Easily propagated from fresh green seed.
 
 
 
Acer Circinatum 'Vine Maple'Section:  Palmata
Synonyms: Acer Virgatum, Acer Macounii, Acer Modocense A. nigrum var. grandidentatum.
Common names: Vine Maple.
Habit: Usually a small tree to dense shrub.  Tends to grow taller in shade.  Native to Pacific Northwest, and the only Palmata naturally occurring outside of Asia.  Grows as an under story tree
among conifers to 10′-15′.
Leaves: Bright green with 7-9 lobes, 3″-6″, brilliant fall color.
Flowers: Purple to red.

Mountain Maple

The Mountain Maple is a multi stemmed, large shrub to small tree.  Its new, young shoots are a nice red.  Yellow to orange fall color, with some reds. Native to the upper Midwest and East Coast of the United States as well as Eastern Canada. Easily propagated by seeds or early summer cuttings.  Rare in cultivation.

 

 

Section:Parviflora.
Meaning of: Spictus, meaning “bearing a spike”, which refers to the large inflorescences that grow upwards, above the foliage.
Synonyms: Acer parviflorum, A. mountanum, A. pumilum, A. rugosum
Common names: Mountain maple.
Habit: Large shrub to small tree, young branches are red.
Leaves: Three to five lobed, 2″-4″ long and wide.
Flowers: Small, yellow/green in May and June.
