Acer carpinifolium ‘Hornbeam Maple’
The Hornbeam Maple is aptly named, as its 3″-5″ oval leaves resemble those of a Carpinus. It is a small vase- shaped, sometimes multi-trunked, tree growing 20′-25′ tall. Fall color is typically a rich orange/brown. It prefers moist, well drained soil with some shade. Native to Japan. Tends to grow leggy in wooded areas and alongside streams in mountainous areas. Extremely hardy. Seldom sets viable seed, therefore Acer carpinifolium is still quite rare in the nursery trade.
