Meaning of: Davidii, named after Father Armand David(1826-1900) French missionary and botanist.
Synonyms:Acer cavaleriei, A. laxiflorum var ningpoense, A. sikkimense var davidii, A. sikkimense var serrulatum.
Common names:David Maple, Father David’s maple, David’s Ahorn(German).
Habit: Multi trunked shrub to tree up to 40′-45′, much smaller under cultivation. Mature branches and stems are green with white stripes; young ones are red with white stripes. Sometimes three to five trunked with a mostly open habit.
Leaves:Oval to oblong shape, 3″-6″, dark green. Young trees usually will have lobed leaves. Mature trees tend to have unlobed leaves. Fall color is yellow and red.
Flowers: Light yellow, with each branch having both male or female flowers. Branches may alternate between male and female flowers in successive years.
