Acer griseum
(Ay-ser  GREE-see-um)
Paperbark Maple

The Paperbark Maple, native to central China, grows slowly to 20′x30′.  It has an oval to rounded habit.  The bark is rich brown to cinnamon brown and begins to exfoliate on its second year of growth.  It is a trifoliate with 3″-6″ long dark green leaves, which turn to bronze red in fall. Colors best with some shade.  The Paperbark Maple is adaptable to most soils but prefers well drained moist soils; full sun.  Truly an ornamental asset.  Seeds usually have a very low viability rate, less than 1%, which contributes greatly to the higher price within the trade.
