Korean Maple
Another small tree from China and Manchuria, similar in characteristics to the Acer palmatum. Grows to a 15′ to 25′ upright tree with an equal spread. It’s green leaves are similar to the palmatums, with 9-11 lobes and fade to brilliant fall colors ranging from orange, scarlet to crimson. It is hardy down to -40°f. Still somewhat rare in the trade. Easily propagated from fresh, green seed or by grafting to Acer palmatum. There is only one subspecies, Acer pseudosieboldianum ssp takesimense.

Common names: Korean Maple, Keijo Hautiwa, Kuwagata Hautiwa.
Habit: Small growing shrub or tree to 15′-25′ with open branching.
Leaves: Nine lobed to 2″-3″ across, dark green. In mild winters leaves may linger until Spring.
Flowers: Purple-red, before leafing out.
Distribution: Korea, Northeast China.
