Manchustriped Maple
The Manchustriped Maple is a small oval to rounded tree that grows to 20′-30′.  It has green to greenish-purple branches that develop white vertical striping on its second year of growth.  Branches have a bluish wax on them. Leaves are 4″-6″, 3-5 lobed, pale green turning yellow in fall.  Native to Manchuria and Korea. Acer tegmentosum rarely sets viable seed, so it is not readily available in the nursery trade.

Meaning of: Tegmentosus, meaning “covered or hidden”.
Synonyms: Acer pensylvanicum ssp. tegmentosum.
Common names: Amur’scher Ahurn, Manchustripe maple.
Habit: Small tree to large shrub to 30′ tall. Branching is sparse.  Young shoots are blue, developing white stripping with age.  Mature branching is purple to gray green.
Leaves: Three to five  lobes, 3″-4″ wide, green.  Leafs out very early in spring.
Flowers: Yellow to green, prior to leafing out, or just as leaves emerge.

Distribution: Moist locations North Korea, Manchuria, Amur and Ussuri rivers of Russia.
