 Acer truncatum is abundant in its native range.  It is a slow growing tree that grows to approximately 20′ to 25′ with an equal spread.  It has a tendency to be a large shrub under cultivation outside of its native range. A very nice maple tree for small lawn areas or streets.  Leaves are 3″-5″ with 5-7 lobes.  New foliage emerges purple-red, fading to a glossy green in summer and changing to yellows, reds and oranges in the fall.  Adaptable to most soils but prefers moist well drained soils.  Native to China.

Truncatus, truncate, refers to the shape of the leaf base.
Common names: Purpleblow maple, Shantung maple, Akajika itaya, Mansen itaya.
Habit: Small tree to 30′-40′, densely branched, green to purple branches.
Leaves: Five to seven lobed, 3″-5″ wide.  Young leaves purple, fading to green with a tinge of purple along edges as the mature.
 

Flowers: Yellow green, after leafing our.
