Willamette hops

The Willamette hop is a fast growing perennial vine used mainly for the production of beer. They will die back to the ground during the winter in most growing conditions. Its pale green-yellow flowers are very fragrant and are what is used in the making of beer. They bloom in June-July and will yield 1 ½ to 2 pounds of flowers per plant. It was introduced by the USDA in 1976 and is now 20% of all hops grown in the U.S. Hops do require a support structure to climb if you will want them to grow so that you can easily harvest the flowers. Other wise, a trellis, fence or wall will do. Hops should be planted in well drained soil, in full sun, and spaced 3’-5’ apart. They require regular water for the first growing season. Fertilize early in the season with a well-balanced fertilizer. They will grow to 20’-25’ tall. Hardy to USDA zone 4, -20f.
