We love this clumping bamboo (non-running) here at the nursery. It is a vigorous and hardy grower. It can grow to 4'-6' tall in just a couple of years. If you were to have only one bamboo plant, this might be it. It’s extremely hardy to -10º f to -20º f and in cooler climates, it takes full sun too. We can get over 100º f for many days straight in the summer. Purple red sheaths on new culms. Very vigorous, rapid growth and cold hardy. Dense, slightly weeping habit. Wind tolerant. Prefers organic soils with good drainage. Thrives in sun but tolerates deep shade as well.

High heat mixed with high humidity would probably be fatal for the Fargesia, so this might not be a plant for those in the southeast states. Try instead any of our Bambusa multiplex or Thamnocalamus.

Fargesia rufa
Common name: Sunset Glow bamboo.
Height x Diameter: Ht 8′-10′x.5″
Minimum temperature: Hardy to -10ºf-20ºf
USDA zone 5-9.
Light: Full sun to part shade
Culm: Green with orange-red
Uses: Specimen, hedge, container, screen
Distribution:Gansu China
Spread: Clumping

The last photos are example of a Fargesia rufa, however, it is not the exact plant that you will receive. Your plant will be approximately 2-3 year old, 3'-4' tall, with 1-3 culms (canes).

Semiarundinaria fastuosa 'Viridis’ Temple Bamboo

This is the green form of the species Semiarundinaria fastuosa. Most every one has a green stripe along the culm. Sometimes the stripe is a tiny pinstripe, sometimes it is much wider. Most all culms have some striping, however, there are times that a culm may be all yellow, other times the culm can be one half green, one half yellow. The amount of stripping is extremely variable not only from culm to culm, but also between each node. The pictures show how the stripping can vary on a culm. Although it can grow very tall, here in the Pacific North West it will most likely reach only 40 feet plus.
