The Humilis is the shortest of all Phyllostachys.  Young culms emerge dark red to purple, turning green to orange/yellow with age, if given full sun.
It makes an excellent short, dense screen,  hedge or grove. The foliage is very dense and lush, usually starting very low on the culms, just above the ground level, making it an excelent choice for a shorter growing hedge.
