Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Madake' Japanese Giant Timber Bamboo

The Madake or Japanese Timber Bamboo has a moderately thick walled culm.  It is very strong and easy to bend and rarely breaks under the stress of snow or ice. It is cold hardy to zero degrees, making it a good choice for colder, snowy areas in the US. The culms are light green and very straight. New shoots are edible.  It is one of the best bamboos for a forest or grove.  Here in Eugene, Oregon, they shoot in June/July.  It’s a great  choice for a tall indoor plant.
