Phyllostachys Nigra 'Megurochiku'
Megurochiku was once rare and protected from collection. It originated from a single Japanese island. Its culms are similar to the 'Henon'. They emerge green and fade to yellow. With age the sulcus, the groove between branches, as shown in the photos, slowly develops a black/brown stripe. In the Pacific Northwest it may grow to 30′, taller in warmer climates. It would make an excellent hedge or grove.
