Chilcoten Red Raspberry

The Chilcoten Raspberry, Rubus idaeus ‘Chilcoten’, is a native North American shrub. It produces two crops of berries. One in mid summer and then again in the fall. The summer crop is heavier with medium sized, sweet red fruit. It is produced on the previous seasons canes. New canes will produce a smaller, fall crop. Canes are nearly thornless. They are excellent for canning, freezing, baking and fresh eating. Plant in full to part sun. Raspberries are moderately fast growing. Mature plants grow to 5’x5’. USDA zones 4-9

The Chilcoten can be planted in almost any sort of well-drained soil.  Raspberries should be planted spaced 2-3 feet apart with 6'-8' feet between the rows. Plant raspberries about one inch deeper than the plant grew in the nursery container.  They can can also be pruned back at this time,  too. Late Fall through early Spring they can be pruned back to 1' or shorter.  Other times of the year just a small pruning back will help them root in and fill out.
