Araucaria Araucana Monkey Puzzle Tree

The Araucaria araucana, Monkey Puzzle Tree, is a rare and unusual type of evergreen conifer. It is threatened in its native habitat of Chile and Argentina, where it grows on the lower slopes of the Andes Mountains. Its leaves are thick and scale like. They are broad at the base and pointed on the tip. Its cones are globe shaped up to 8” in diameter. Young trees grow in a pyramidal shape developing into an umbrella shape as it ages. Its branches are grown in tiers and have very few, if any, side branches. It does well in most soil types provided that it has well drained soil. It was given its name because it was thought that monkeys would not be able to climb it due to its spiky branches. It is considered very deer proof as well as monkey proof.  They are slow growing, especially when young.
