Phyllostachys vivax
Phyllostachys vivax is the fastest growing cold hardy bamboo. It is very fast growing, up to 72′. Here in the Pacific North West it is the largest growing bamboo that we have, to 60′ by 4″ in some places. The shoots are excellent for eating. Usually they can be harvested in June/July. The vivax has thinner walls than other giant timber, making it a great bamboo for crafts. In areas with heavy snow or ice the culms can break due to weight. It is hardy down to -5°F .
