Blueray Blueberry

Blueberries are well-shaped, upright and vigorous plants with dark green foliage. In addition to the berries, blueberries are beautiful ornamental, native shrubs with spring flowers and fall color. They can be included in the landscape as either a single planting, hedge/border or in areas such as native gardens and woodlands. They also make nice container plants for a patio or deck. Blueberry plants are very hardy and long-lived. They prefer organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained acidic soils in full sun to part shade.

The Blueray Blueberry is an early mid season Northern Highbrush variety. It has very large, very sweet berries that ripen in early July. It is very cold hardy, down to a USDA zone 4, -20f to -30f. Probably the largest berry for a blue berry plant. It is a very vigorous and productive variety. It is a bush that grows to 4’-6’. It’s foliage turns to crimson red in the fall. Its flowers are pink. The Blueray is self pollinating but will do better with another earl mid season or mid season variety. Blue berries grow best in organic, well drained acid soil. They prefer full sun. Plant your blue berries 4’-8’ apart. It is widely planted in the Midwest and Northeast and is very dependable in cold regions. The Blueray will produce berries when it is 2-3 years old and will need 700-1000 chill hours.

Height: 4’-6’, but can be kept smaller with some pruning.
Minimum temperature: Hardy to -20f to -30f.
USDA zone: 4-11.
Light: Full to part sun.
Fruit: Large blue.
Bearing age: 2-3 years.
Pollination requirements: It is self pollinating but does better with another blue berry nearby.

Pollination and Ripening

While Blueray Blueberries are partially self-pollinating, planting more than one bush can improve fruit set and yield. Bees are effective pollinators for blueberries. They typically ripen in mid to late summer, offering a bountiful harvest. The plant generally starts bearing fruit within 2 to 3 years after planting.

USDA Zones/Minimum Temperature

Blueray Blueberries are well-suited for USDA hardiness zones 4 to 7, thriving in cooler climates with winter chill requirements. Hardy to -20f to -30f.
