Cornusa Florida

The Cornus Florida is a native North American tree. Its habitat is Eastern North America from Maine to Florida, east to Illinois, Kansas, Texas and Mexico. It typically grows as a small tree to 15’x15’ with low-branching, horizontal limbs. Sometimes larger in ideal conditions. It flowers in early Spring, around April, and has large, 3”-4” bracts that are white to pink. The bright red fruit that follows will ripen in Fall and are favorite of wildlife. In its native habitat it grows as an under story tree. It easily grows in average soil as well as it is well drained. Moist, organic well drained soil with slight acidity is best for any dogwood. It can be planted in full sun to part shade but shade is probably best, especially in hotter areas of the country. Its foliage will turn to red to reddish purple in the Fall. Hardy to USDA Zone (5).  Plants shipped in Fall and WInter may not have any foliage on them.
