Vaccinium corymbosum 'Duke'

Blueberries are well-shaped, upright and vigorous plants with dark green foliage. In addition to the berries, blueberries are beautiful ornamental, native shrubs with spring flowers and fall color. They can be included in the landscape as either a single planting, hedge/border or in areas such as native gardens and woodlands. They also make nice container plants for a patio or deck. Blueberry plants are very hardy and long-lived. They prefer organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained acidic soils in full sun to part shade.

The Duke Blueberry is an early season (May) Northern Highbrush variety. It is high yielding with medium to large berries are great for fresh eating. It is cold hardy to a USDA zone 4, -20f to -30f. Blueberries produce fruit when they are 2-3 years old and do better with a second variety planted nearby. Blueberries grow best in organic, well drained acid soil. They prefer full sun.  Plant your blue berries 4’-8’ apart. The Duke needs 800-1000 chill hours.

Pollination and Ripening

Duke Blueberry is self-pollinating, meaning you can expect a good fruit set without the need for multiple plants. However, planting more than one blueberry variety can enhance overall fruit production. It typically ripens in mid to late summer, making it a delightful addition to your summer harvest. The plant reaches its full bearing age at around 2 to 3 years after planting.

USDA Zones/Minimum Temperature

The Duke thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 7, making it well-suited for a variety of climates. It can tolerate winter temperatures as low as -20°F to -30°F (-29°C to -34°C). This makes it an excellent choice for northern gardeners who need a reliable, frost-resistant variety.
