Fargesia ‘Rufa’,Sunset Glow clumping bamboo non running, great hedge or specimen

The Fargesia rufa is one of the most cold hardy clumping type of bamboo available on the market today. It is very well behaved and does not spread like running types of bamboo. It will get wider at the base as it matures, similar to an ornamental grass. We love this clumping bamboo (non-running) here at the nursery. It is a vigorous and hardy grower. It can grow to 4'-6' tall in just a couple of years. If you were to have only one bamboo plant, this might be it. It's extremely hardy to -10º f to -20º f and it takes full sun too. We can get over 100º f for many days straight in the summer. Purple red sheaths on new culms. Very vigorous, rapid growth and cold hardy. Dense, slightly weeping habit. Wind tolerant. Prefers organic soils with good drainage. Thrives in sun but tolerates deep shade as well.

High heat mixed with high humidity would probably be fatal for the Fargesia, so this might not be a plant for those in the southeast states. Try instead any of our Bambusa multiplex or Thamnocalamus.

The last photos are example of a Fargesia rufa , however, it is not the exact plant that you will receive. Your plant will be approximately 2-3 year old, 3'-4' tall, with 3-5 culms (canes).
