Planting Guide for Panicle Hydrangeas
Site Selection: Panicle hydrangeas are the most adaptable hydrangea type. They thrive in full sun to part shade and tolerate a wider range of soil conditions than other hydrangeas. Full sun produces the largest, most abundant blooms.
Time of Year to Plant: Plant in spring or early fall when temperatures are mild.
Spacing: Space plants 4 to 6 feet apart to allow for mature spread and good air circulation.
Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Amend with compost. Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the first season. Panicle hydrangeas are more drought tolerant than bigleaf varieties once established.
Mulching: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pruning: Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood — prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut back by one-third to one-half to encourage vigorous new growth and the largest possible blooms.
Drying blooms: Cut stems when flowers are fully open and hang upside down in a cool, dry location. Silver Dollar blooms hold their shape and color exceptionally well when dried.
